Tommy EmmanuelI was at the Budapest Palace of Arts with my friends again and recorded a concert held by the amazing guitarist Tommy Emmanuel.

Unfortunately there were many dynamic volume changes and I forgot to adjust the recording level accordingly, so there are clips and distortions.

The mastering was done in the old fashioned “eq by ear” method. Surprisingly this record sounds better than the previous ones (not counting the distortions), low-end is much finer, but the highs are still missing (shame on you, MuPa sound engineers).

Now it’s working on my desk. It’s pretty strong, I can’t stop it with my bare hands, I hope it’ll rotate my big yagi easily. I’ll perform a full antenna test in our yard tomorrow or on thursday.

UPDATE: pictures are here.

Now it works perfectly on my desk. :)

After I’ve designed the schematics and made the PCB for the rotator, I put it together:

I’ll upload the schematics & source code when I finish the project. I’m using a wonderful PICKit2 programmer/debugger and Hi-Tech C compiler to make my life easier.

The program is almost finished, I hope I can put the whole rotator together by tomorrow evening, and accomplish the first tests with my big yagi in 2 days.

Last summer I got an old antenna rotator from a friend. It’s controller is missing, but at least it still works and it’s only rusty, and needs a little renewing, and of course a new controller.

Martha Wainwright - Special Edition AlbumQuite sad but very inspiring music waits for you on this nearly perfect album. The lyrics are very moving, Martha’s voice completely matches them.

The first song, Far Away is one of my very favorites in this style of music. The third one called Factory is in my 4th Dreamport mix.

I’ve bought this CD in an HMV shop in London back in February, too.

You can find more info about the the singer here, and prelisten her songs here.

9:30 Collective & Alien ChatterI’ve quickly finished mastering of my latest live recording of 9:30 Collective & Alien Chatter‘s concert at Budapest Palace of Arts held on Monday last week.

This time I used Har-Bal for eq balancing and suprisingly it worked great for this lo-fi kind of stuff. This recording sounds much better (but still has the usual problems, muddy low-end etc.), only slight eqing and loudness adjustment were needed after processing.

FSCO bootleg

Free Style Chamber OrchestraI’ve recorded Free Style Chamber Orchestra‘s concert at Budapest Palace of Arts back on 14th January, but I’ve almost forgot it, as well as to do some mastering and upload the file, so here it is.

The quality is the same as previous bootlegs: it was recorded with my M-Audio Microtrack with it’s factory default stereo mic. There’s a lot of reverb, and the low-end of the freq spectrum is very muddy, high- and low-end were missing in the original recording – say thank you to the tone-deaf mixing engineers at the Palace.

My new guitar

Yesterday I bought a beautiful classical guitar manufactured by Louis Arostegui Granados around 1970 in Madrid. It’s in perfect condition, and sounds great. I’ve just applied some lubrication on the nut with a soft lead pencil and paraffin on the tuning pegs.

More pics here.

Kings Of Convenience - Quiet Is The New Loud coverThis is much like my previous recommendation, Zoe Johnston’s music – simple and beautiful acoustic folk music, with vocals, acoustic guitars, and: VERY good lyrics – this is my favorite Kings Of Convenience album since I first heard it 4 or 5 years ago.

I felt Riot On An Empty Street and Versus a little boring. Technically, the songs have a few problems (if we can call them problems). For example, some of the tracks contain low freq rumblings – maybe a big truck passed the road near the studio during recording, or something went wrong with the tapes (the album was recorded using Studer tape machines) – and the last few tracks contain high frequency noises, but these flaws are negligible.

Their song (not from this album) called Free Falling is in my 6th Dreamport mix.

I’ve bought this CD in an HMV shop in London, and I’m very happy that the lyrics are included in the (very intimate) booklet. They are so life-like, the first song is about me, eventually :)

You can find more info about the band here, and prelisten their songs here and here.
